How to Burn Candles Safely at Home
Candles bring warmth, ambiance, and delightful fragrances into our homes. However, it's important to handle them responsibly to ensure the safety of your household. At Elm Design Candles, we’re passionate about creating safe, high-quality scented candles that enhance your living space. Our non-toxic candles, including our signature long-burning soy candles, are designed with your safety and comfort in mind. Here are some essential tips to help you enjoy them safely.
1. Choose the Right Place
Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
Keep candles away from anything that can catch fire, such as curtains, furniture, or flammable decorations.
Avoid drafts from windows, fans, or air vents, as they can cause uneven burning or increase the risk of accidents.
Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about ¼ inch. This helps:
3. Never Leave a Candle Unattended
Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or going to bed.
Avoid burning candles in areas where children or pets could accidentally knock them over.
4. Burn Candles in Intervals
To prevent overheating the container or wax tunneling, burn your candle for 2-4 hours at a time.
Allow the wax to melt evenly across the surface before extinguishing it to maximize the candle's lifespan.
5. Use Proper Tools for Extinguishing
Use a candle snuffer to extinguish the flame. This reduces smoke and prevents hot wax from splattering.
Avoid blowing out candles, as this can cause wax to spill or sparks to fly.
6. Monitor the Burn Level
Stop using the candle when about 1/4 inch of wax remains at the bottom of the container.
This prevents the container from overheating, which can crack or shatter.
7. Keep the Candle Area Clean
Regularly remove wick trimmings, matches, or debris from the wax pool to prevent flare-ups.
Clean your candle jar if soot accumulates to maintain a neat appearance.
8. Follow the Manufacturer’s Instructions
At Elm Design Candles, we include burning instructions on each candle to help you use them safely and effectively. Always read and follow these guidelines for the best experience. You can find these guidelines on the bottom of every Elm Design Candle.
Avoid placing candles near electronic devices, TVs, or high-traffic areas where accidents are more likely.
Use candle holders or trays to catch any dripping wax.
10. Extinguish Safely in Emergencies
If a candle catches fire, do not use water to extinguish it, as this can cause wax to splatter. Instead, use a fire extinguisher or smother the flame with a metal lid or damp cloth.
